Who writes it
Ryder M.. Ryder M. is the hands-on owner behind Magoo Media Group, the publisher of Siren & Safe. He researches home fire and carbon monoxide safety gear against published standards — UL listings, NFPA 72 placement requirements and manufacturer documentation — so the guidance here is traceable to a source you can check yourself.
That is the complete claim, and it is deliberately narrow. He is not a firefighter, an electrician, an inspector or a fire marshal. He holds no certification in fire protection. There is no editorial board here and no panel of experts — one person writes these pages, and when something on the site is wrong it is his to fix.
We are stating that plainly because the alternative is what most of this category does. During research for this site we read competitors whose author bylines carried job titles like “Home Safety Equipment Specialist” with nothing behind them, on domains that also sell craft supplies. Inventing a credential is easy and it is the fastest way to lose a reader who checks.
Why this site exists
Because the thing that determines whether a smoke alarm saves your life is mostly not which alarm you bought. Every listed alarm has passed the same UL 217 tests. What varies is whether there is one in each bedroom, whether it is more than ten feet from the cooker, whether anyone has checked the date stamped on the back, and whether the household has ever practiced getting out.
When we surveyed the pages ranking for these searches, every one of them ranked products and none of them treated placement and code as a subject. So Placement & Code is a full section here rather than a paragraph at the end of a buying guide, and it carries the site’s most detailed work — including an original room-by-room placement diagram that no competitor we found had drawn.
What we do not claim
- We do not test products. No laboratory, no smoke chamber, no burn tests. Where an organization that genuinely tests has published findings, we cite them by name.
- We publish no star ratings or review counts. The scores on our roundups are our own editorial judgment against published criteria, and they never enter our structured data as product review ratings.
- We display no prices. We do not cache retailer prices, so every buy link says “check price” and takes you to the live listing.
- We have no testimonials. We are a publisher, not a service business. There are no customers to quote, so there is no testimonials section anywhere on this site.

Scope
Everything here is written for the United States: NFPA 72 and the residential code, UL listings, American English and US products. If you are in the UK, Australia or Canada, the code guidance on this site is the wrong code for you — we would rather say that than write vaguely enough to appear to cover everywhere.
We cover residential only. Commercial and multi-family code is a different path with a different buyer, and we do not pretend otherwise.
