What is most useful to send
- A correction. A wrong code section, a clearance distance that does not match the standard, a broken link. Include the page URL and the sentence you think is wrong. Material corrections get a dated note on the page rather than a silent edit — see the editorial policy.
- A discontinued or recalled product. These are urgent to us. A recalled product comes off every page immediately, and a discontinued one within 30 days. If you have spotted something before we have, that is genuinely valuable.
- A question we have not answered. If a placement situation is not covered by the placement section, that is usually a page we should have written.
- A citation request. The placement diagram and the checklist are free for a fire department, a landlord association or a school to use with attribution. Ask and the answer is yes.
What we cannot help with
We cannot tell you what your local code requires. Requirements vary by state and municipality and your local authority having jurisdiction may require more than the national standard — your building or fire department is the only authority on that, and they will usually answer a phone call in minutes.
We also cannot diagnose a specific alarm remotely, take product submissions for review consideration, or accept sponsored or guest posts. We do not publish either of the last two, at any price.
